Is automation necessary?
In a private residence automation is a luxury item - if you are building a new home you will probably want the best features you can get within your budget and to complement your decor. Lighting is the most common function managed by an automation system, but anything that can be switched on and off can be controlled - window coverings, fans, water supplies, irrigation systems - the list is endless. Having control from a central point with some devices operating to a schedule, gives you a level of comfort you will get used to very quickly. A home with some automation or structured cabling is attractive to potential buyers should you decide to move.
Is automation just for homes?
When implemented in a commercial premises, an automation system, particularly if it is linked to an access control system, is the best move for energy management and efficiency. There is no need to have lights on all day in unattended areas for example, so an automation system will pay for itself in a relatively short time. With a correctly configured system, lights, signage, air-conditioning and other services can be switched on and off automatically only when needed, but with the provision of operation by staff to override functions, for example, after business hours.
How much planning is involved?
The majority of the planning is carried out by your integrator, but you should think about where you may want music for example - it is easy to run cables at the building stage even if you do not want that feature yet, but it will be ready when you do with the minimum of expense and effort. Some systems, like C-Bus, require a specific cabling methodology, so placement of touch-screens and switches need to be thought out in advance. Switch Automation, however, is a modular system so requires less up-front commitment to wiring infrastructure and can be taken with you if you relocate.
